The grapevine f?mily, Vit?ce?e, is believed to be over 65 million ye?rs old ?nd would h?ve initially spre?d ?round the globe by continental drift long before us hum?ns ?rrived on the scene. It’s unclear where Vitis vinifer? origin?ted but there is evidence that we have been growing grapes since the e?rliest days of civiliz?tion from ?s far b?ck ?s 6500 B.C. By 4000 B.C. grape growing extended from Transcaucasia to Asia Minor ?nd through the Nile Delta of Egypt. The three prim?ry uses for gr?pes ?re for wine, dried fruit (raisins) and fresh table grapes.

Gr?pevines are grown in regions ?cross the globe where temper?tures during the growing se?son ?ver?ge 13-21°C. These temperature limits are found mostly in the mid-latitude regions of the continents, With c?reful cultiv?r selection and use of micro clim?te it is possible to grow outside of mid l?titude regions with good success but most commerci?l production of grapes is grown within the preferred clim?tes.

The most d?m?ging pest of the vine was Gr?pe Phylloxera – Daktulosphaira vitifoliae which during the mid 1850’s completely destroyed 2,500,000 ha of vine in western Europe. These ?lmost microscopic, pale yellow s?p-sucking insects, related to ?phids, feed on the roots ?nd le?ves of grapevines and ?re e?sily recognisable by the g?lls they create on the leaves of the vine.
